On the eternally busy National Highway 17, now re-numbered NH 66, from Mangalore to Udupi a left turn at Katapadi leads to Mattu Beach. It is a 30 Kms long beach 15 kms to left is Kaup beach and 15 kms to the right is Padukere beach running all along the beaches of Arabian Sea. On the other side of Padukere beach River Papanashini runs all along and joins the sea at Malpe. Malpe which is famous for another Malpe Beach and Malpe Fishing Harbor is also famous for Shri Balarama Temple established by Shri Madhvacharya along with the Shri Krishna temple at Udupi .
