Krishna Raja Sagara Dam (KRS), Mysore

The Krishna Raja Sagar Dam or KRS as it is fondly called is also known as Kannambadi Anekattu. It is around 140Kms from Bangalore on Srirangapatna Hunsur road. Kannambadi was the place where the KRS was built.

As Kannambadi submerged, people were relocated to Hosa Kannambadi which is on the left bank. Recently, the Venugopalaswamy Temple which remained submerged in KRS was also replaced to Hosa Kannambadi and as of July 2013, the finishing works of this temple is under way.

KRS was built by Sir Mokshagundam Vishweswaraiah (Sir M V) the greatest engineer of his time in 1932. It was an engineering masterpiece still standing as strong as ever. The dam maximum storage level of 124.80 ft. and its gross storage capacity is 49.45tmcft. it is built across River Kaveri. Here, River Hemavathi and River Lakshmanatheertha join Kaveri in its divine journey of around 800Kms right across South India.

Brindavan Garden which also houses rare musical fountain is constructed near the dam.  There are many temples around the Dam which were built in Hoysala era in their trademark architectural style.  Prominent among are Varadaraja Swamy and Narasimha Swamy temple of Maddur, Anantha Padmanabha and Kashi Vishweshvara Temple of Mandya - Hosa Budanuru, Venugopalaswamy temple of Hosa Kannmbadi, Pralaya Varahanatha Swami Temple of Kallahalli, Cheluvaraya Swamy Temple (Built by Sri Ramanujacharya in 1120 A.D) of Melkote, Brahmeshvara Temple (1171 A.D) of Kikkeri , Lakshmi-Narayana Temple (1250 A.D) of Hosaholalu and Sri Arkeshwara Temple in K R Nagar.
